My Five Favorite Mahjong Sets (From Splurge to Steal)
One of the questions I get asked most often at lessons — usually somewhere between the Charleston and someone's first mahjong — is "Amy, which set should I buy?"
I love this question, because it means you love Mahjong as much as I do! And the honest answer is: it depends on your budget, your style, and how you plan to play. I've had my hands on a many tiles, teaching around Sonoma County, Marin County, and Napa County, and these are the five sets I find myself recommending again and again. Is it a lot? Yes. Is that the point? Also yes. I recommend this one for the hostess whose game nights are events — the player who has a signature cocktail and a themed napkin situation. Despite all the personality, the layout stays clean and easy to read, so it plays beautifully too. Same generous 160-tile configuration with jokers and blanks, ready for American mahjong.

Now let's talk about the sets I recommend to brand-new students, because I would never tell you that you need to spend $500 to fall in love with this game. You don't!
This BeautyChen set is one of my favorite finds: 166 tiles (including 10 jokers and blank spares), made of sturdy, scratch-resistant melamine with carved, hand-painted patterns and a pretty blue back. The tiles run about 1.2 inches — a comfortable size for shuffling and racking — and the whole set is light enough to throw in a tote for lessons. It's adorable, it's durable, and it costs a fraction of the designer sets.

My other go-to starter set. Simgoing makes a 160-tile American mahjong set in engraved melamine with bright, cheerful artwork on the faces and a classic colored back. The engraving matters more than you'd think — you can feel the design under your fingertips, the tiles have a satisfying weight, and the patterns stay crisp through years of play.
This is the set I suggest when someone wants a second set for the house, a set for the kids or grandkids to learn on, or tiles they won't be precious about at a crowded table. Note that this one is tiles only, so if you need racks and pushers, you'll want to pick those up separately.

So... Which One Should You Get?
Here's my honest advice: your first set just needs to get you playing. Either of the Amazon sets will serve you beautifully while you learn. Then, once mahjong has fully taken over your life (it will), treat yourself to the splurge set that makes your heart sing — whether that's hand-painted lilac, shimmering pearl, or full Glitterville sparkle.
